The incredible thing about Breakthrough is that as you are coming alongside students who may never have heard the gospel before, God also comes alongside you and teaches you things you never expected to learn. This project is the perfect combination of external ministry and internal growth. I have grown so much over the past year because of the two summers I spent in the Middle East. Learning how to be vulnerable, missional, relational all with a dessert waffle in hand (they are the best food ever!).

Like most important experiences in my life, and in others, God is long at work before I am ever consciously aware of His guidance. Only after reflection and time, am I able to get a small glimpse of His grand plan.
The Lord began to open my mind to the idea of breakthrough summer project before I even knew of this option and opportunity.
Almost four summers ago, my family decided to go on a vacation to the Middle East and spend time in the city where the breakthrough summer project is located. We had a wonderful time exploring the city, eating exciting new foods and falling in love with the culture. I remember leaving to return to the states without any sadness about the finality of the trip; I had a feeling that I would come back.
When presented with the invitation to return the following summer, I felt like the decision was extremely clear. I was open to the fact that God was calling me on a summer project and because of my previous family trip, I had the support of my friends and family. I had only been a follower of Jesus for one year and I was craving growth and closeness with the Lord.
While on summer project, we spent time digging into the book of Ephesians and learning more about how to live in a faithful and missional Christian community. I was constantly challenged and encouraged by my peers to be in the word on a daily basis and to pray for all the situations we encountered while in a foreign country.
I was amazed by how many times God was visible while there, especially in our interactions with the locals. I was able to develop a strong relationship with one girl in particular and we have remained friends over the past three years. She has taken steps towards Jesus and she has even declared Him as her savior. While there have been setbacks in her spiritual journey, she has recognized her desperate need for the Lord. Watching her push through the difficulty of being in the religious minority of her country has encouraged me to remain faithful and committed.
This past summer, I returned again as student staff and was blown away by how God is working. One very wise Cru director used a perfect analogy to explain the ways God is working in this country. He said that God is using students and staff as empty pans; He is putting them onto his field and waiting to collect the rain. While on project this past summer, I believe we witnessed the beginnings of a rain shower. God is moving in this country and His truth is building momentum.
